Goodbye T-Mobile..
Ah, its the end of an era, as they say.. in a couple of days my contract with T-Mobile will be ended and I'll be leaving for the 3UK network. Despite my rant last year about T-Mobile's disclosure of subscriber details, my main reasons for leaving have been economic, and to be honest, the need to downsize my collection of mobile devices. At the moment I'm lugging around a Blackberry 8310 on contract, an Inq Mini 3G on PAYG and a 3MiFi also on contract. As I've used the Inq Mini 3G more and more, I've come to realise just what a versatile (and cheap) device it is. Not only does it make calls(!), but it also has a very good email client which I'm now starting to use heavily on a daily basis. It also has a decent web browser and a Twitter app - again, both used regularly. The really useful option though is to be able to use it as a tethered modem with the Samsung Netbook running Windows 7 Starter Edition, and I've already used it "in the field" to send live pictures to a news agency while I was covering a recent free-Gaza protest in London. So it didn't take too much soul-searching to decide to get rid of the Blackberry and transfer my number to 3UK on PAYG. And that's where the other saving comes in: at the moment, on contract my average monthly bill comes to around GBP50, which is quite a commitment at the moment. If I continue to use the PAYG phone like I do at present I can expect that to drop to about GBP12-15 a month, and I'll feel that I'm in control again! The PAYG will also work in Europe, but sadly not in the US nor Australia, so my best option is to buy a SIM card while I'm out there and just use my old unlocked Nokia which is there as a spare. So now my PAC has been applied and hopefully in a couple of days it'll all be transferred and working as intended: until then, if you can't get through to me or get a recorded message, just give me a shout via this system and I'll get back to you!

Looks like my mobile phone contract will be ending
Looks like my mobile phone contract will be ending soon-who'd have thought that 18 months would be up so quickly? I've decided not to take out another contract but will be switching to PAYG instead, and this will be cheaper for me long term. I actually use my existing phone more for data and TXTing than "real" phone calls and since the little Inq Mini 3G has proven so reliable-especially on the Internet-it really makes sense to buy cheap and run cheap. This really came home after my contract roaming charges in Australia left me with nearly a GBP170 bill! I'm not sure which handset to go do at the moment but it'll most likely be Android based with a touch screen. Stay tuned for more updates.

Blackberry update..
Well, I've now spent some time getting the new phone set up and it really is taking some getting used to when compared with the Nokia N95: luckily this is in a good way though. It was relatively easy to walk through the setup wizard and get surfing the net: the only real problem I had was when I tried to access the 'net via any external app, such as Gmail, and Google Maps. The BB was convinced there was no Internet connection, but this was untrued turned out to be a couple of missing settings on my price plan. I've since had to "invest" in the instant email option to allow my Internet access to be opened up.. Hmmm.. well I guess that's no bad thing as for only another fiver a month I can now have email pushed to me, thus saving having to keep connecting all the time. You can bet I'll be extremely choosy who I hand this address out to :-) Then, another call to someone more technical who confirmed that "just one more setting had to be changed and then all would work as the designer intended". And lo, it came to pass, and in only 10 minutes too: Google Maps burst into life and this will save me a potential £80 a year Telenav subscription fee. I can also use Google Mail which incidentally looks very good on the 320x240 screen and in fact I use this a lot when I'm on the move. The only slight downside so far is that although I now have a real Internet connection, the browser still won't upload files properly, so I may have to do some work on getting that sorted. So here's the pros and cons on day 2 of ownership:

Phone upgrade soon!..
It doesn't seem long since my last mobile phone upgrade, and a chance check on the T-Mobile site tells me that I'm eligible for another freebie on December 18th! My first thoughts were to look at the Google T1, but reading some in-depth reviews that severely criticised battery life and usability put me off. Although I'm an early adopter (as my pile of esoteric computer hardware shows) I don't want to be caught with another battery-eating dog like the NEC e313 which saw me scurrying back to T-Mobile. Nice features but eating two batteries in a day? No. So I then looked at the Nokia offerings that I could get for free, and was actually quite unimpressed: the best that they seem to do is the next generation version of my N95, the N96. Not that the N95's been bad, but I've always found the construction a bit lacking and quite early on a crack appeared in the back cover. The sliding top also seem to get very stiff early on too and then loosened off again for no apparent reason. So I looked around a bit more and made a decision to go for a Blackberry Curve 8310 which is free on my monthly plan. I had a look at one yesterday and was impressed by the big screen: I'd kinda got used to that on the N95 but this one is even bigger. The keys aren't too bad either, although getting used to a real QWERTY keyboard after generations of standard phone layout keys will be a challenge. The camera's actually a downgrade at 2Mp but I don't use the N95's camera at full resolution as the colours are too washed-out at full res. They also don't seem to be easy to enhance in the way that a "real" camera's images are so it shouldn't be too much of a loss (famous last words!). I do actually have to wait until 18th December though which is a shame as I wanted to take it to Prague at Christmas: I don't feel happy about taking a completely new and unfamiliar phone with me when I might actually need something I can use quickly and reliably. So, come back on the 18th for the unboxing and I'll tell you what the first impressions are..
